BEL – A Waste Vessel

Perhaps one of the most overlooked objects in the home, the waste vessel occupies a unique position, both functional and expressive. Like the furniture, lighting, and objects we choose to surround ourselves with, it quietly communicates our values and personal taste. Yet it is often treated as something to hide. BEL was conceived to challenge that perception.

Designed for carefully curated interiors, BEL transforms an everyday necessity into a sculptural object worthy of display. Informed by architecture and geometric compositions, its monolithic form exists somewhere between sculpture and utility, revealing little of its purpose at first glance. Conceived not merely as an object to be used, but as an object to live with, BEL invites a reconsideration of the everyday, elevating a familiar necessity into a more conscious and meaningful part of the domestic landscape.

Underlying the project is a belief that the way we handle waste today plays a meaningful role in shaping tomorrow. By rethinking the waste vessel as an object people are willing to live with rather than hide away, BEL seeks to create a more considered and engaging approach to waste sorting.

Crafted from hand-brushed stainless steel and anchored by a concrete base individually cast by hand, BEL combines durability with a tactile, architectural presence. BEL features a removable lid with a discreet rubber seal that effectively contains odours. The waste bag is concealed from view and secured to an internal frame resting on two integrated hooks, allowing for effortless removal and replacement while maintaining BEL’s uninterrupted silhouette.
